INSIDE THE BRAND: NATURALS OF ALKEBULAN

With the use of natural skin care products on the rise, we are happy to introduce you to Moroccan Rhassoul Clay, a product from Naturals of Alkebulan. This organic, vegan, 100% cruelty-free and eco-friendly brand is free from GMOs, parabens and chemicals. We spoke with CEO & Founder, Toddossa Coleman about her fondness of African culture and how she combined her passions into a beauty secret of her own. Read all about how the healing properties of this amazing clay can benefit your skin and hair.

How did the brand get its start?

I noticed that there was a lack of high quality green beauty brands for people of color. While studying public health in college and traveling throughout the world, I noticed in those four years, there was one thing in particular that caught my eye when I visited the rural communities and villages. Each country and region had their own healing beauty secrets that the elders used for years. What’s so amazing about this was, a majority of their ingredients were plant-based, from natural and organic sources containing no toxic chemicals! I chose Africa because as an African-American, I hold the many cultures of Africa dear to me. There is a lack of education on holistic health and the many beauty secrets of Africa. From Moroccan Beldi Soap to Ugandan Nilotica Shea Butter, just to name a few, are rich ingredients we use sourced from Africa. That is why I named my business Naturals of Alkebulan, because Alkebulan is one of the many true names of Africa.

What inspired you to introduce Moroccan Rhassoul Clay to your product line?

Moroccan Rhassoul Clay is the holy grail of all clays out there! It is perfect for sensitive skin whilst helping those with oily, acne-prone skin. Another great quality about this clay is that it works well for curly/kinky hair. It helps retain moisture and length. It also helps to prevent shedding, and defines curls. Most clays are just good for drawing impurities out of your face, however, this clay does that and so much more. It is a staple product for a green beauty regimen.

Where do you source your clay?

We source our clay in Morocco. The Rhassoul Clay is from the Atlas Mountains in Northern Morocco. That is why we sell it in its purest form, so customers can reap the benefits of the clay itself without toxic preservatives.

Is this for all skin types?

Yes, especially sensitive skin! Those with sensitive skin, oily, and acne-prone skin tend to mix our clay with honey and water, and those with dry skin tend to mix our clay with their favorite non-comedogenic oil.

What are the benefits of this mineral clay?

Where do I begin? Moroccan Rhassoul Clay displaces toxic build up within the skin, improves skin tone and texture, and helps diminish whiteheads and blackheads. For the hair, the clay helps soften and hydrate curls, eliminate shedding and promotes length retention.

So this clay is not just for the face?

Not at all! At Naturals of Alkebulan, we provide beauty care from a holistic approach. Some of our customers use our clay as a face and body mask to reap its amazing skin benefits and others use our clay as a hair mask. It works great as a hair mask because with our Moroccan Rhassoul Clay, you can create your own hair mask based on your hair needs. Depending on your hair porosity, you can add your favorite hair oil, such as, avocado oil, coconut oil or olive oil, to the clay. Based on your hair needs, you can either apply the mask before shampooing or in between shampooing and conditioning.

How often should you use the Moroccan Rhassoul Clay?

How often you use it is dependant on your skin type. Those who just want to use the clay for a spa-like feeling and to draw out impurities we suggest once a week for use. For those with oily, acne-prone skin and are suffering from random breakouts, we suggest 2-3 times a week for use.

What other products from your line can you suggest to compliment the Moroccan Rhassoul Clay?

Our pure Rose Water Toner is a great product to complement our Moroccan Rhassoul Clay because it hydrates and softens the skin with each use. Instead of using water to mix the clay, some of our customers use our Rose Water Toner instead, since it is 100% Rose Water from Morocco. Other products that complement our clay are our Face.Hair.Body Oils. Each of our oils are curated to benefit a specific skin type and can be used after spraying our Rose Water Toner on your face. Just a few drops of our Face.Hair.Body Oil and your face will be hydrated and nourished without a greasy feel.
