Tell us the Bag Balm story. How did the brand get its start?
Bag Balm was created in 1899, over 115 years ago, by a Vermont dairy farmer in the small town of Lyndonville, located in the corner of the state known as the “Northeast Kingdom.” Bag Balm is the original udder balm, designed to soothe and heal the chapped udders of cows as a result of the milking process. Over time, farmers from this rugged area of the state, especially during the harsh winters, were applying Bag Balm and found that the product had significant benefit to their own hands and other parts of the body. So, Bag Balm became a common solution to soften and moisturize calloused and weathered hands and feet whose story spread through families and from generation to generation.
What ingredients or properties make Bag Balm especially effective or unique?
Bag Balm has three simple and highly effective ingredients:
Petrolatum, which provides the moisturizing effect on the skin.
Lanolin, which provides the softening and smoothing effect on the skin.
8-Hydroxy Quinoline Sulfate, which is the first antiseptic and anti-microbial to be used in an over-the-counter skin care product.
There are no other skin care products that use this unique combination of ingredients, which serve to return damaged or compromised skin to its original state with regular usage. You can feel the effect immediately, and it lasts. Even the most problematic, chronic skin conditions can be dramatically improved by the regular daily use of Bag Balm. Once a consumer tries it, they quickly become committed daily users because of the effectiveness of the formula to treat a wide range of damaged skin conditions.
Why does a woman need Bag Balm in her skin care routine?
Daily dry skin, callouses, and crusty, rough skin is a common complaint of many women, particularly on their feet, as well as hands. Many women have reported the daily practice of applying Bag Balm in the morning on their hands before they leave the house, and in the evening before bed on their feet to soften, moisturize and condition their skin through the night. Bag Balm is a highly therapeutic product that solves a wide variety of skin conditions, and it is often thought of as the product of last resort. If nothing else is working, you can be absolutely sure that Bag Balm will. That’s why we call it the “rescue balm!”
