When and how did the brand get its start?
I have always used “natural” skincare, but I became hyper aware of all the miscellaneous ingredients in so many of the products that I was using when I was pregnant with my son in 2014. I didn’t want to use these products on the largest and most porous organ of my body while I my child was growing inside of me, so I began to source raw products that were food grade to use on my skin. After a ton of research and experimentation, I formulated our body butter for personal use then started sharing it with friends and family. Everyone loved both the consistency and the results so much that they wanted to give the butter as gifts for different holidays. From there, Hamlin Apothecary was created!
You come from generations of entrepreneurship. What is your key to success for serving customers for over 100 years?
I think the main key to our success is our hands-on approach to everything, from making the products by hand to customer acquisition and retention. My great-great grandfather, the founder of Hamlin Drugs in Raleigh, N.C., used to hand deliver prescriptions and other healthcare needs from his drugstore to his customers over 100 years ago and we strive to serve our customers with the same level of healing care that he passed down through the generations.
What are the key ingredients in the Tropical Citrus Whipped Body Butter?
The base of our body butter is a mixture of mango butter, cocoa butter, shea butter and coconut oil that is infused with chamomile & calendula then scented with all-natural mango fragrance and Pink Grapefruit, Bergamot and Blood Orange essential oils.
What are the benefits of these ingredients?
The base ingredients are chosen based on their nutrient content and their molecular ability to carry both those nutrients and additional vitamins and essential oils into the pores of the skin. They are all both moisturizing and vitamin dense, so their healing properties are immense. The scents were created based on aromatherapy properties, so the Tropical Citrus scent is uplifting.
What other fragrances does the body butter come in?
We offer our body butters in the following fragrances:
Unscented- delicately scented with the chamomile that it is infused with.
Lavender- infused with lavender buds and scented with Bulgarian lavender essential oil.
Jasmine- infused with jasmine buds and scented with Jasmine and Bergamot essential oils.
Citrus- scented with Lemongrass, Pink Grapefruit, Mandarin and Bergamot essential oils.
Coconut Ginger- infused with ginger and scented with all-natural coconut almond fragrance and ginger essential oil.
Amber (seasonal)- scented with all-natural amber fragrance and frankincense essential oil.
As an entrepreneur, what advice would you give to other women who aspire to start their own business?
I’d tell other women who aspire to start their own business to follow their passion. I feel that the key to achieving success is to start a business that solves a problem that you can relate to.
What’s next for Hamlin Apothecary?
We are working to expand our product line with new scents and products. Our long-term goal is to acquire a dedicated production space, so we can provide work for women in transition. We’d like our products to not only heal the body, but the community as a whole.
